Can I wash a 9 × 12 rug in the washing machine?

Generally, no, we do not recommend putting a large 9×12 rug into a home washing machine. Here’s why:

Many home machines can’t handle the size or weight of a heavily soiled rug once it’s wet — it can damage both the rug and the washer. Oversized rugs often require special handling, professional equipment, and hot water extraction (steam cleaning) to remove deeply embedded dirt and moisture without harming the backing or fibers. In some cases, we recommend professional cleaning because we can control water temperature, apply the right pretreatments, and ensure quick, safe drying.

If you try to clean such a large rug at home and don’t fully dry it (or use the wrong method), it increases the risk of mold or odor.
