How do you clean a large rug indoors?

Here’s a step-by-step outline of our typical process (or what we recommend to customers):

Assessment

We inspect the rug to identify fiber type, backing, stains, and trouble spots (like pet accidents).

Based on this, we choose the right cleaning solution and pre-spray.

Pretreatment / Prespray

Apply a pretreatment to loosen dirt and break down oils, stains, or pet soils.

For odor or pet-accident areas, we may use enzyme cleaners or deodorizers.

Hot Water Extraction (“Steam Cleaning”)

We use a professional-grade extraction machine with heated water (~140°F or more) to deeply penetrate the rug and extract dirt.

Powerful suction removes water, minimizing drying time.

Rinse & Neutralize

After extraction, we do a rinse pass (if needed) to remove cleaning residue.

If the rug requires pH balancing (to neutralize cleaners), that’s done here.

Grooming & Drying

We groom the fibers (e.g., rake or brush) to set the pile.

We use air movers or fans to accelerate drying. Proper drying is critical — damp rugs are at risk for mildew.

Post-Cleaning Inspection

We walk through with you (or take photos) to confirm stain removal, fiber condition, and any remaining issues.

Provide after-care advice (how long to wait before walking on the rug, vacuuming tips, etc.).
